They produce long white shoots which then send up further shoots to the surface. If the rhizome is cut it will produce a shoot, and therefore digging around the garden or other disturbances are known to increase the stem density. If the soil contaminated with the rhizome is moved to another part of the site, or moved to another site completely, it will re-grow and cause further spreading.
 
Treatment of Japanese Knotweed on riverbanks should be treated as soon as possible, because bank erosion can lead to plant material breaking off and dispersing downstream and therefore spreading the Japanese Knotweed to other areas.
